1. How much equipment do I need to take with me?
This really depends on how many exchanges you are going to perform while you are out. As a general rule, we recommend the following for each exchange:
- 3 caps
- 3 clamshells
- 2 x sets of clamps
- Paper Towels
- 1 x Renal Freedom Hygiene Pack

2. Do I need to use a particular surface to prepare my exchange?
You can use any surface to carry out CAPD providing it is sterile. We recommend the combined use of our ‘SafeStart’ Exchange Mat and Surface Preparation Wipes. This way you can be sure of the cleanliness of your exchange area.

3. Do I have to prepare a warm bag?
This is very much personal choice. Many patients find an unheated bag leaves them uncomfortably cold during, and for some time after, their exchange. It is recommended by most Renal Units that patients use a warm bag. Using cold bags can reduce the performance of your peritoneal membrane and therefore the effectiveness of your dialysis.

4. Where can I do an exchange on the move
Anywhere! The great thing about performing CAPD using the Renal Freedom products is the flexibility! As long as you have a clean surface (use our wipes and mat), clean hands (use our hand wash or hand wipes) and everything with you that you need (in our heated bag) you can carry out an exchange in your car, on a train, out shopping, on holiday, up a mountain.the possibilities are endless!

5. Might people object to my performing a 'public' exchange?
They shouldn't! You are not doing anything wrong or endangering the health of anyone else. In fact, you are probably doing them a favour by sterilising the area! In addition, you have as much right as anyone else to go about your everyday activities how you choose. Remember you dialyse to live, not live to dialyse!
If you prefer privacy, many public places now have first aid rooms or baby-changing facilities that are ideal for CAPD. Check out our Friends of Renal Freedom for exchange-friendly places.

6. Can your warmer replace my existing NHS one?
Yes. Our warmer can be used however you like. Use it at home and be confident that it will be ready to move when you are.

7. How do I know when the fluid is ready?
Our warmer heats your fluid slowly to a recommended temperature between 33oC and 38oC over a time of 3-5 hours (based on a 2.5L solution bag) and then maintains the temperature using its thermostatic controls (for up to four hours). If the fluid feels warm and comfortable to you but not hot to the touch then it's ready to use. Remember the idea of using a warmer is only to prevent using cold bags; you can use your solution at any temperature over 30oC when the chill will have been taken from the bag.

8. I bet it's heavy?
Surprisingly no, the warmers have been designed to be as light as possible with straps capable of offering maximum comfort while carrying. When full our warming bag will weigh no more than the average laptop bag.
